The Hertfordshire County Council has signed a contract with the British subsidiary of Veolia to manage its residual waste. Its new £1 billion deal to handle Hertfordshire waste 30-year contract with the English county situated north of London is valued at £1bn, the French environmental services group announced yesterday.

To treat the waste, Veolia plans to construct a waste-to-energy (wte) plant with an annual capacity of 350,000 tonnes at Rye House in Hoddesdon. Should the outstanding authorisation be granted on schedule, construction of the facility is expected to begin in 2017 and operations are slated to commence in 2020.

Estelle Brachlianoff, Senior Executive Vice President Veolia UK and Ireland: “Our partnership with Hertfordshire County Council has been strengthened following this new contract that will result in a significant investment in waste treatment infrastructure.
