Two men arrested for poaching had dead pheasants in vehicle near Hitchin

Two men were arrested on suspicion of poaching pheasants near to Hitchin on Wednesday, November 2.

 

The men, a 24-year-old from Hillingdon and 23-year-old from Harefield, were arrested after members of the public reported individuals were behaving suspiciously in the area of Lye Hill in Breachwood Green, near Hitchin.

 

Police officers were sent to the scene and the men were arrested on suspicion of poaching and trespassing.

 

A vehicle parked close to the scene containing dead pheasants was also seized.

 

Both men have been released on bail and are due to return to Hatfield Police Station on December 15.

 

North Herts Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector Duncan Sales said: “We will not tolerate poaching in North Herts and will deal robustly with anyone committing this crime. 

 

“To help us in the fight against poaching we rely on reports from members of the public. Therefore I would encourage anyone who witnesses people poaching or behaving suspiciously in the county’s rural areas to call us via the police non-emergency number 101. If you witness a crime in progress please call 999.”

 

Pheasant refers to several genera within the subfamily Phasianinae, of the family Phasianidae in the order Galliformes. These are two from St Albans
